Karen Robson - Southern Daily Echo "The dark element to the Oklahoma! story, usually sugar coated by the characters, exuberant songs and the comedy, was more to the surface in this production. Never has Oh what a beautiful morning sounded so ironic than here when sung as a refrain after the death ofJud. Director David Tatnall has created a dynamic, briskly paced show, inventively staged with well choreographed action. The singing was first rate and the crowd scenes were particularly well done. The two leads (Ella Williams and Tom Chenhall) had an easy manner, great stage presence and sang their roles to perfection. They were equally matched by Jack Shaw-Downie (Will) and Lauren Caffyn (Ado Annie). Lauren was charming and kooky in equal measure with a great gift for comedy. Sophie Jounet (Aunt Eller) in her last role for FYT was the rock of the story and the production, giving an unshowy performance that nevertheless shone." |
