Karen Robson - Southern Daily Echo "COME and meet those dancing feet" as the new staging of 42nd Street at the Nuffield Theatre proved to be a toe tapping experience. For those with memories of the old Busby Berkeley dance numbers, this show has enough cleverly choreographed routines to keep them happy. Smartly paced with great use of the auditorium and lighting, this was a witty and above all fun production. It was graced with some excellent performances. As the ingenue Peggy Sawyer, who steps in to the save the show, Ella Williams gave a fittingly star-making performance. She has extraordinary stage presence. Steven Lilly was in commanding form as the overbearing but totally committed director of the show, and Natalie Thorn was sassy and smart as the worldly wise Maggie Jones, even in a not very becoming wig. If at times some of the singing struggled to be heard over the music, this was a first night glitch which will surely be ironed out during the run." |
